Lasix

Lasix is a loop diuretic drug that prevents the body absorbing excessive amounts of salt. The active ingredient in Lasix is furosemide which is formulated as oral tablets in strengths of 20mg, 40mg and 80mg.

Drug Uses

Lasix is available by prescription only. The active ingredient in Lasix prevents the body from absorbing too much salt. The excess salt is eliminated through urination. Lasix is used to treat fluid retention in patients who have liver disease, congestive heart failure, or nephrotic syndrome (a kidney disorder). Lasix is also used to treat high blood pressure.

Doctors may prescribe Lasix for other medical conditions.

Dosage

Lasix should be taken as prescribed by a doctor. Never increase or decrease the dose without consulting a doctor.

Missed Dose

If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as you remember, as long as it does not clash with the next scheduled dose. In this case, rather skip the missed dose. Never take a double dose.

Precautions

Do not take Lasix if you are allergic to furosemide.

Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: liver or kidney disease, gout, lupus, an allergy to sulfa drugs, or diabetes.

Pregnant women, and women planning to become pregnant, should discuss the risks of using Lasix with a doctor because it is not yet known if Lasix can harm an unborn fetus. Women who are breast-feeding should also discuss the risks of using Lasix with a doctor because Lasix is passed into breast milk.

During treatment with Lasix you will need to have your blood tested regularly to ensure that Lasix is not having any harmful effects. You may also need to have your liver and kidney functions tested regularly.

Ensure that your doctor has a full knowledge of your medical history, including any other medications you are using. These include vitamin supplements, herbal medicines and over-the-counter remedies. Lasix can react badly with certain medications.

Increase your intake of fluids while using Lasix as this drug can cause dehydration. You may urinate more often while taking Lasix.

Lasix can increase sensitivity to sunlight. If you go outdoors wear protective clothing and apply a sunscreen with a high SP factor. Avoid sun lamps and tanning booths.

If you are using Lasix to treat high blood pressure, do not discontinue taking this medication without consulting a doctor.
